The 12 Components

1. Decide the purpose of schooling.
➢ How should schools be? Start with a purpose. Come up with a metaphor for learning in your school. The metaphor you decide on will shape your action.
➢ Is your school an assembly line?, a community?, a business?, a nation state? etc
➢ Come to understanding about the essential purpose of school today.

2. Identify values which you hold dear to as a school community
➢ What is most valued in your school. Tell the stories about what is most valued in your school and why. Include the stories of students and the parents.
➢ Develop an agreed set of values and beliefs for your school

3. Engaging with external context
➢ Schools cannot shut the gates they need to connect with the community.
➢ Hold workshops, meetings with your community so they to know about changes and can provide their point of view

4. Include Everybody
➢ Run surveys for parents, students, teachers.
➢ Develop an informed perspective.
➢ Convince people of the need for change
➢ Create a sense of urgency

5. Presencing
➢ Understand what good learning is
➢ Sensing, observing, listening, reflecting acting
➢ Reflect on what you are doing now and how you see into the future.

6. Develop a shared paradigm
➢ Work on the learning in your school. What does it look like in practice. Align your beliefs with what is or needs to happen in the classroom
7. Lead Appropriately for change.
➢ Read, talk, visit so you are prepared

8. Manage change and micro politics
➢ Listen
➢ Avoid balkanising the opposition
➢ Provide opportunities to express concern
➢ Be aware of gate keepers
➢ Bear the projected anger
➢ Develop resilience as a leader
➢ Keep the staff informed
➢ Change on the upcycle ( Handy’s sigmoid curve)

9. Provide appropriate PD- get help if you need it.
➢ Learning consultant
➢ Process consultant

10. Adapt structures and architecture
➢ Resources will be stretched so keep an eye on the ball

11. Evaluate regularly
➢ Make sure you continually reflect on your progress. Talk to parents, students, revisit the vision and your values

12. A continually reinventing school
➢ Change is continuous. Make sure your staff are comfortable with the fact that you will never get “there” There will always be areas to review
➢ Programmes, architecture, pedagogy, structures and culture
